How virtual try-on works

5-minute read

You have probably been there before. You spot a gorgeous jacket online, add it to your cart, wait for it to arrive, and then discover it looks nothing like you imagined on your body. Virtual try-on is here to change that. It lets you see how clothes actually look on you before you spend a single cent.

The basic idea

Virtual try-on uses artificial intelligence to place a garment onto a photo of you. Not a mannequin, not a model with a different body type, but you. The result is a realistic image that shows how a piece of clothing would drape, fit, and look on your actual figure.

Think of it as a fitting room you can access from your couch.

How it works, step by step

The process is surprisingly simple from your side. Here is what happens behind the scenes:

  • You upload a photo of yourself. A regular full-body photo is all it takes. No special equipment, no studio lighting.
  • You pick a garment. Browse items from any supported retailer and choose the piece you want to try on.
  • The AI reads your body. It identifies your shape, pose, and proportions, understanding where your shoulders are, how your arms are positioned, and how your torso relates to your hips.
  • The garment gets fitted digitally. The AI wraps the clothing around your body in the photo, accounting for how the fabric would naturally drape, where shadows would fall, and how lighting would interact with the material.
  • You see the result. A natural-looking image of you wearing the garment, as if you had actually put it on.

A peek under the hood

You do not need to understand the technology to use it, but if you are curious, here is a simplified look at what the AI is doing.

Pose estimation is how the AI maps your body. It detects key points like your shoulders, elbows, hips, and knees to build an understanding of how you are standing or sitting. This ensures the garment aligns with your posture naturally.

Image segmentation helps the AI separate you from your background and identify what you are currently wearing. This way, the new garment can be placed precisely on your body without awkward overlaps or cutoffs.

Generative AI handles the creative part. It synthesises a new image where the garment looks like it genuinely belongs on you. This includes realistic fabric textures, proper folds and creases, correct lighting and shadows, and natural colour rendering. The goal is an image that looks like a real photograph, not a paper doll cutout.

Why this matters

Online shopping is convenient, but the guesswork around fit and appearance has real consequences.

  • Fewer returns. When you can see how something actually looks on you, you make better choices. That means fewer packages going back and forth.
  • More confidence. No more wondering whether that dress will work with your proportions. You already know before you buy.
  • Less waste. Returns are not just inconvenient. They generate emissions from shipping and often end up in landfill. Better decisions mean a lighter footprint.
  • More fun. Experimenting with new styles becomes risk-free. Always wanted to try a bold pattern or an unfamiliar silhouette? Now you can see it on yourself first.

What makes Tailor Fable different

Most virtual try-on tools are locked inside a single retailer's app. You can only try on clothes from that one store. Tailor Fable works differently.

We are building a cross-retailer virtual try-on experience. That means you can browse garments from multiple shops and brands, all in one place, and see how any of them look on you. No switching between apps, no juggling accounts. One photo, endless outfits, from anywhere.

Whether you are comparing a Zara blazer with an &Other Stories coat or mixing a high-street top with a designer skirt, Tailor Fable brings it all together.

Try it yourself

We are currently building Tailor Fable and opening early access soon. If you want to be among the first to try virtual try-on across your favourite retailers, join our early access list. It takes five seconds, and we will let you know as soon as it is ready.
